The risks associated with practicing Christianity in Iran are higher than one might imagine. With secret police raiding house churches and apprehending congregants, church gatherings become precarious events. Fatemeh recalls the piercing fear of that ill-fated day when they were torn apart by law enforcement, a stark reminder that their faith is viewed as a threat by the government. Despite these harsh realities, her belief in God remains unyielded, signaling a fierce commitment to living out faith amid adversity.
Faith’s Journey Through Challenges
Fatemeh’s spiritual journey has been long and arduous. Transitioning from her previous life to embracing Christianity was not seamless. In an environment where Christianity is frowned upon, she felt isolated and uncertain about how to navigate her faith. “We had become Christians, but we still didn’t know how to live like one,” she admits. This lack of guidance for new believers can create confusion and leave many struggling to grow in their faith.
A New Beginning with Support
Fatemeh eventually found mentorship through Fayiz, an Open Doors partner, who helped her attend a Christian conference outside Iran. This proved to be a transformative experience that revitalized her relationship with Jesus. “I truly started to build a relationship with Jesus and began to understand who He really is!” she exclaims, demonstrating how crucial support systems are for believers in hostile territories.
Keeping the Faith Amidst Fear
Fatemeh's life is now punctuated with constant caution. Following a police raid, her community had to go underground once again. “We couldn’t keep Christian materials or even a Bible in our house,” she reflects. For years, the specter of arrest loomed large, forcing believers into hiding. Now, after years of struggle, they have begun to gather resources and meet regularly again—albeit in secrecy—showing that, while they are still at risk, their faith continues to blossom.
