Uber CEO Steps Down from Aurora Innovation's Board to Focus on Core Responsibilities
Dara Khosrowshahi, the CEO of transportation giant Uber, has recently announced his resignation from the board of Aurora Innovation, a leading player in autonomous vehicle technology. According to a regulatory filing made on Friday, Khosrowshahi's decision was driven by his commitment to concentrate on his duties at Uber and the desire to pare down external board roles. His resignation became effective this past Tuesday.
Background of Uber and Aurora's Collaborative History
The relationship between Uber and Aurora Innovation has historical roots. In 2020, Uber transitioned its self-driving unit, Uber ATG, to Aurora, marking a significant move in the autonomous technology space. The transaction saw Uber exchange its equity in ATG while investing a substantial $400 million into Aurora. This strategic deal resulted in Uber acquiring a 26% stake in the combined entity, and Khosrowshahi joining Aurora’s board.
Future of Autonomous Trucking Partnerships
Despite Khosrowshahi's departure, the professional linkage between Uber and Aurora remains robust. A multi-year partnership is in place to integrate Aurora's autonomous technology into Uber Freight, Uber's freight brokerage service connecting shippers and carriers. Notably, Uber's engagement with autonomous trucking technology is not exclusive, as it simultaneously collaborates with Waabi, another self-driving truck startup led by Raquel Urtasun, a former Uber ATG executive.
Leadership Changes and Strategic Implications
With Khosrowshahi stepping down, Aurora is set to welcome Shailen Bhatt, senior vice president and chief operating officer for AtkinsRéalis, onto its board. Bhatt's extensive experience with the Federal Highway Administration positions him well to contribute to Aurora's strategic goals. This leadership adjustment coincides with the impending exit of Aurora's general counsel, Nolan Shenai, who departs on January 6, 2025, succeeded temporarily by Ossa Fisher, Aurora's president.
